Bonsack is an unincorporated community in eastern Roanoke County near the junction of US 460 and US 220 Alternate. It sits on the route of the Trader's Path, established in 1740 between Lynchburg and Big Lick, the settlement that became Roanoke.

Blanket mills and the railroad

Bonsack took its name in the 1850s from the Bonsack family, who gave land for a depot and track for the Virginia and Tennessee Railroad. Jacob Bonsack owned two woolen blanket factories here, and by 1860 the mills employed 18 men. Union troops raided the community in June 1864 and burned the mill and the depot.
