Salem is an independent city of 25,346 people (2020 census) on Roanoke's western edge. It's the county seat of Roanoke County, home to Roanoke College and the Salem RidgeYaks minor league baseball team, and it was officially founded in 1802 along the Great Road, roughly where US 11 and Interstate 81 run today.
