Plumbing in a mountain valley
Roanoke sits in the Blue Ridge along the Roanoke River, with Mill Mountain and its lit star inside the city limits. At the 2020 census it had 100,011 people, the most of any Virginia city west of Richmond. Homes here range from railroad-era houses near downtown to newer builds on the slopes, so pipes of every age are still in service. Rain is the big risk
The city's history shows flooding as Roanoke's main weather hazard: rain from the remains of hurricanes drains off the surrounding slopes into the narrow valley.
