Plumber in Vinton, VA

Vinton at a glance

Vinton is a town of 8,059 people (2020 census) in eastern Roanoke County, covering about 3.2 square miles. Its western edge runs along the city of Roanoke, and some neighborhoods are split by the boundary. The 2020 census counted 3,774 housing units.

What that means for your plumbing

Elevation in town runs from about 890 feet at the lake in the Roanoke River gorge to 1,265 feet on Olney Road. On hillside lots, water from a storm runs downhill toward the next house, so basements on the low side of a street take more water. A tested sump pump is worth having before heavy rain.

Bedroom community

Vinton is largely a bedroom community for Roanoke, so many homes sit empty during the workday. A small leak can run all day unnoticed. A leak alarm near the water heater and washing machine costs little and can save a floor.

From Gish's Mill to a railroad town

In 1797 the Gish family built a gristmill on Glade Creek, and the area was known as Gish's Mill. When the Atlantic, Mississippi and Ohio Railroad came through, the mill became a stop, and the Gish family led the push to build a town around the depot. After a mass meeting in 1883, Vinton was incorporated in 1884. Homes from the town's early railroad decades can still have original drain lines; if roots or slow drains keep coming back, see drain cleaning.
